Written to be spoken is a series of workshops/seminars/modules that invites sound, visual, and performance artists into a discussion in which we focus on writing and textual practices within the performance spectrum- directed and facilitated by Egyptian multidisciplinary artist Mohamed Abdelkarim. In this edition of “Written to be spoken” hosted by “Sonic Spaces,” we are inviting you to think together about how we trace the spoken word and its connection to sound, orality, vocality, language, theater, poems, press, radio, poetry, etc. To deepen our understanding of language and sound, the seminar combines content from different fields, forms, and media. The six-day workshop begins with three days of introductory presentations on the development of text-based performance, the use of language, and its politics. These presentations will be. followed by three days of production modules and a think tank on how we can understand the current Egyptian rap scene as a contextual form. The workshop will focus more on the sound/text production that intersects/learn/ appropriate/reflect on the current Egyptian rap scene in particular and Arabic-speaking rap production in general.
